Dry beans are a small but mighty part of the field crop sector in Manitoba. Acreage is rebounding after a dip in the 2010s, with Manitoba growers projected to plant 180,000 to 200,000 acres to dry beans in 2024. So, researchers are working to provide them with better dry beans varieties for higher yields, increased disease resistance, enhanced seed quality.

Extremes in weather can impact flax and chickpea production differently. To see if intercropping chickpea and flax could reduce disease pressure, stabilize yield, and expand where these crops could be grown outside of their normally adapted area, research led by AAFC is looking to develop agronomic practices that could encourage adoption of intercropping.
