Pulse growers more than double investment in pulse breeding at CDC

Saskatchewan Pulse Growers announced nearly $23 million in funding to support pulse crop breeding at the University of Saskatchewan’s Crop Development Centre for the 2015-16 to 2019-20 time period. This funding will be applied to the third five-year term in SPG’s 15-year pulse crop breeding agreement with the CDC and will support continued work in the areas of pea, lentil, chickpea, dry bean, and fababean breeding. >> Read full article

Potential for new weed control technologies in Canada

We have gotten into the cycle of using one herbicide and then when it doesn’t work, switching to use another herbicide. It just isn’t working anymore and we need to look at other alternatives. Ongoing research in Western Canada is looking at alternate weed control technologies that do not utilize herbicides to target weeds. Herbicides typically target annual weed species at the seedling stage. Harvest weed seed control, an Australian paradigm of weed control, shifts the focus of weed control from the seedling stage to the adult stage, after the seeds have been formed and before they go back into the seedbank. >> Learn More…
