Two lentil growers near Swift Current manage their operations in the same way – sticking with a plan that reduces risk yet delivers results.
One of the growers keeps a steady hand on the wheel with a single over-arching mantra: Take care of the land and it will take care of you.
The other grower makes spray decisions on a Hutterite colony. He spreads out risk so that he’s not caught in a wet year, a late spring or any other kind of adverse weather.
Common between them are two big problems – wild oats and kochia. Both persistent weeds across the brown soil zone and are facing resistance management issues.
Kochia causes different headaches since it’s a flushing weed and shows up again after a burnoff, unless there’s extended weed control used too.
