Here’s an idea to engage non-farming family in a farm succession plan

In succession, it’s vital to manage people’s expectations. Setting the tone early can help.

Many farmers will put generational transition high on their priorities for 2022. Transition can help launch the senior generation toward a happy retirement, while giving the new farming generation every chance at success.

The interests of the family’s non-farming children should also be considered in a way that addresses their needs, while balancing the ongoing needs of the farm. If non-farming children aren’t considered, or given too much in the transition, it may cause conflict, confusion, or imperil the farm’s future. That’s a dilemma: what’s a loving parent to do?

To Elaine Froese, a farmer and family coach based in Boissevain, Man, the key is for the senior generation to communicate their wishes: clearly, early and unapologetically. This transparency can quickly get everyone on the same page.

“Parents need to pay more attention to explaining not just their wishes, but the why, the reasons behind those wishes,” says Froese.

Non-farming children might believe the farm’s successors are being treated preferentially. As Froese sees it, that’s a perception parents need to nip in the bud.

“It’s ok to tell non-farming children that what they want isn’t workable for the farm business, and explain why,” says Froese. “These non-farming children want to feel heard and understood. They might not like what they hear, but in my experience, being clear from the start is the kindest thing you can do.”
