Western bean cutworm has yet to be found in Manitoba, but the pest spreads rapidly. Corn and dry bean producers should be scouting for the pest and new research reveals that the pest can have an impact on mycotoxins levels in grain corn. In particular, Ontario researchers looked to western bean cutworm for some possible explanations for the province’s high-DON corn year.

Rotation options for Atlantic farmers are growing with recent research and the establishment of a pulse processing plant in Prince Edward Island. Research based in P.E.I. is investigating what pulses do well in Atlantic Canada with the goal to generate basic agronomic data, including looking into intercropping mustard and peas like it’s done in Western Canada.
