For the second year in a row, Manitoba Canola Growers Association’s Pest Surveillance Initiative (PSI) lab is offering Manitoba producers free blackleg race, clubroot and glyphosate-resistant kochia testing on one field this fall and winter. PSI is a province-wide effort to understand, monitor and prevent diseases that represent a serious economic threat to Manitoba producers.

With 15 different quality targets, a moderate grain protein of 11 to 12.5 per cent and the need for uniform maturity, the margin for error is slim for malt barley production in Western Canada. John O’Donovan, a retired research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lacombe, Alta., investigated if high yield and malting quality could be more easily achieved.
