For years, Ascochyta blight in chickpea has served as the textbook example of “fungicide insensitivity.” But recently, the Prairie pathogen world has become more inclusive, with fungicide-resistant populations detected in other crops, such as lentils, barley and peas. Randy Kutcher, professor at the University of Saskatchewan, identifies several factors contributing to the rising risk and incidence of fungicide insensitivity.

Despite having several years of involvement in the agriculture world under her belt, editorial director Stefanie Croley admittedly had never heard of take-all until very recently. As AAFC’s Kelly Turkington notes, the disease was prevalent in the mid-to-late ’90s, but has nearly disappeared from the list of potential threats to cereals thanks to good agronomic approaches and management practices.
