Pea leaf weevil and cabbage seedpod weevil were missing in action in 2019 and 2020 on some parts of the Prairies. One reason was likely cold winter weather. James Tansey, provincial insect/pest management specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says the lack of snow and cold winter temperatures likely contributed to a decline in both weevil populations in those growing seasons.

Don Flaten recently retired from the University of Manitoba after spending 45 years learning and working in agronomy and soil fertility. At this year’s Top Crop Summit, Don reflected on the soil fertility lessons he learned – and some that he forgot – along that education and career path. In 2019, Yvonne Lawley, a professor in the plant science department at the University of Manitoba, and Callum Morrison, a University of Manitoba PhD student, set out to learn more about what Prairie farmers are doing with cover crops.
Lawley and Morrison were featured in an August 2020 episode of Inputs to discuss preliminary results of the 2019 survey and cover crop recommendations for Prairie growers. Now, nearing the culmination of their study, the two return to discuss outcomes gleaned from the survey and the future of the project.
