More to learn about soybean rotations

With soybeans gaining traction in Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan, the question now becomes: how to best fit them into crop rotation? While a corn-soybean rotation is popular in the U.S., that can result in serious herbicide resistance issues. On the Prairies, rotations have been more diverse. Common sequences include wheat-soy-canola or cereal-soy-cereal-canola. But are there more possibilities? » Learn more...

Intercropping can improve irrigated corn silage

Saskatchewan’s Irrigation Crop Diversification Corporation recently undertook a demonstration to evaluate the results of intercropping corn and faba bean compared to mono-crop corn. With Faba bean, a long-season crop, the crops have potential to mature at a similar date, facilitating an ideal harvest for silaging. Read how the demonstration unfolded. » Learn more...

Agronomy update: Controlling glyphosate-resistant kochia in chemical fallow

The first cases of Group 9 glyphosate-resistant (GR) kochia were confirmed in Canada in 2011 in Alberta. Now, a decade later, with GR kochia rapidly spreading across the Prairies, and glyphosate heavily relied upon for weed control, alternative herbicide control options are required. A study was recently conducted in southern Alberta to assess herbicide mixtures with multiple modes of action to manage GR and glyphosate-susceptible kochia in chemfallow fields. » Read more...

Cereal seed treatments: The nano generation

Modern seed treatment technology that can act at a nano scale is in the making in Alberta. At a nano scale, treatment can target genetic material in cells – and such technology could effectively target smuts in cereals, thus reducing the need for broad-spectrum fungicidal seed treatments in Prairie cereal crops and moving away from such fungicides. » Read more...
