Everyone wants to improve canola production and increase yield – but that’s easier said than done thanks to a number of factors. Researchers and industry are trying to get a better understanding of the interactive effects of management and environment on canola emergence and stand establishment – factors that help drive yields and improved production. A recent pilot project implemented an observational research approach, something not typical in agronomic field research, to understand what is occurring in farmers’ fields, and how that affects canola.

Prairie weather in recent years has shown just how devastating both flooding and drought stress can be for crop yields. Data has shown that excess moisture and lack of moisture are nearly equal in their frequency of causing yield loss. With Manitoba farmers seemingly dealing with one moisture extreme after another, AAFC researchers are looking into data on varietal responses to different moisture regimes to help growers deal with these stresses.
