Environmental stress factors such as heat stress, drought and frost can pose challenges for annual field crop production on the Prairies. These outside factors, coupled with diseases and insect pests, can significantly impact crop production and yields. But one needs only to look at the change in conditions from spring 2021 to 2022 to see that crop growers never know what the prevalent stress will be from one year to the next. Researchers are looking to develop solutions that can help crops avoid multiple environmental stresses through identifying common mechanisms and barriers that enable multiple stress resistance.

Rising input costs, climate change effects and challenging production environments have researchers and industry exploring new alternatives for improving soil health and yields. Enter bio-inoculants, natural micro-organisms applied to soil or plants to improve soil health. Researchers in Manitoba have isolated naturally occurring soil organisms that support crop production and increased yields while enhancing phosphorus usage. Trials looked at different bio-inoculant products, and a team is now looking at how to commercialize those products.
