With over $6 million in federal support, Genome Canada is funding two new genomics hubs to maximize the impact of climate-smart agriculture and genomics research. Each hub will support the sharing of information across the interdisciplinary challenge teams (ICT) projects and beyond, with the goal of maximizing the impact of this important research.

The government of Canada is investing over $2 million over 4 years to Performance Plants Inc. (PPI) to develop climate change-resistant, high-yielding soybean through selected genetic lines and to enable field testing. The objective of the investment is to create soybean varieties that are more heat and drought tolerant, herbicide resistant, use water efficiently, and sequester carbon into the soil.

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) has renewed their financial commitment to Olds College to support their continued focus on advancing ag technology and applied research through the Olds College Smart Farm. Their partnership originally began in 2019, helping advance the AgExpert Data Lab, which serves as a collaborative workspace for students, instructors, industry partners, and the Smart Farm Integration Team.

Soil organic matter is an integral part of the concept of soil health and has numerous benefits, including soil moisture retention, improved nutrient cycling and enhanced crop productivity. Researchers are exploring how reintegrating livestock into cropping systems may be a strategy for improving soil health and cropping system profitability over time.
