SaskOilseeds is calling for nominations to fill four positions on their newly formed board. As the SaskCanola and Flax Commissions official merger into a single organization took effect on August 1st, they are looking for registered producers to join the board of eight farmer-elected directors. The four-year director terms start in January 2025.

While European corn borer is only an occasional pest in Western Canada, it's important to be aware of it since some of its hosts are grown in the region. Scout for adult female moth eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves in June, July and August in corn and potatoes.

The value of a fall cover crop depends on a farm’s objective. Cover crops prevent soil erosion, increase biodiversity and provide soil and environmental benefits. On the other hand, there are labour, seed and equipment costs. A network of multi-year on-farm trials in Manitoba found negative impacts on yield and economics during three dry years, but potential for other benefits.

A plant’s root-associated microbial community is intimately linked to the plant’s growth, survival and productivity. According to a project led by microbiologist Tim Dumonceaux, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in Saskatoon, the microbes in and around an oilseed plant’s roots could be a resource for helping the plant deal with drought stress.
