Canadian cultivated farmland values rose by an average of 5.5 per cent in the first half of 2024, according to the mid-year farmland values review by Farm Credit Canada (FCC). Over the 12 months from July 2023 to June 2024, there was a 9.6 per cent increase, representing a slowdown compared to the previous 12-month period (January to December 2023).

On Oct. 4, Kody Blois, MP for Kings–Hants in Nova Scotia, announced up to $6.8 million over five years to the Organic Federation of Canada (OFC). Blois made the announcement on behalf of federal ag minister, Lawrence MacAulay, and the investment is through the AgriScience Program – Clusters Component, a Sustainable CAP initiative. This funding will allow the OFC to partner on research into the environmental benefits of sustainable farming practices and address challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, soil health and water quality.

The adoption of physical impact mills has seen some inroads on the Prairies with an estimated 30 impact mills in use in Western Canada in the fall of 2023. A study was conducted by research scientist, Breanne Tidemann, with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in Lacombe, Alta., to gain insight from early adopters on the Prairies – ultimately to increase the adoption of HWSC as part of an integrated weed management program in Canada.
