There's nothing spooky to report this week, but there is cause for celebration. Harvest is wrapping up across the Prairies with the most recent Saskatchewan and Alberta crop reports recording 99 per cent completion - and Manitoba is close behind.

Harvest in Manitoba was 95 per cent complete on October 22. The latest Manitoba crop report says winter wheat yields ranged from 60 to 90 bu/acre, fall rye yields ranged from 80 to 110 bu/acre, spring wheat yields ranged from 60 to 95 bu/acre, barley yields averaged between 80 to 120 bu/acre (with some exceptions) and oat yields ranged between 110 to 180 bu/acre. Canola yields were variable, ranging from 25 to 65 bu/acre.

Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC)’s AgriStability program updates will reduce paperwork and accounting fees, lowering costs for producers with a new option to align AgriStability reporting with tax filing in 2025. AgriStability is a program designed to support farmers who experience margin declines greater than 30 per cent due to production loss, adverse market conditions and increased costs.

The Canadian Grain Commission is now partnering with Soy Canada to deliver the Soy Quality Program, a program previously delivered by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Harrow Research and Development Centre. The Canadian soy food industry has come to rely on this program and the program will continue to deliver quality testing for new food-grade soybean varieties and performance testing of soy food products, including soymilk, miso and tofu.

Too hot. Too dry. Too wet. Too cold. These extremes in weather can impact flax and chickpea production differently. To see if intercropping chickpea and flax could reduce disease pressure, stabilize yield, and expand where these crops could be grown outside of their normally adapted area, research led by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is looking to develop agronomic practices that could encourage adoption of intercropping.
