Not a big fan of rust diseases in wheat? Thankfully, researchers are analyzing more than one method to beat them. They're not only searching for new resistance genes, but also tweaking defeated resistance genes to make them effective again.

Saskatchewan producers wrapped up harvest a few weeks ago with most crops yielding above the 10-year average. Exceptions were durum, oats, canola and mustard. While current topsoil moisture conditions are better than this time last year, growers are still hoping for rain and snow.

When it comes to getting a better yield potential, hybrids with Bayer ® traits are delivering impressive numbers. Since 2020, they’ve produced a 6% bushel/acre increase*. Don’t miss out on that all-important yield. Make sure you’re growing TruFlex ® or TruFlex ® LibertyLink ® canola hybrids from Bayer.
*Data source: Bayer advanced canola hybrids versus WCCRCC checks (InVigor 255PC and Pioneer 45H33), 2020-2024, N=968

Rust diseases are one of the major challenges for wheat production. While wheat varieties with good disease resistance packages to control rust diseases are currently available to growers, the spread and emergence of new pathogen races can overcome genetic resistance. Wheat breeders and researchers continue to search for novel genes for resistance to rusts, bacterial leaf streak and tan spot.

Stripe rust has caused yield loss for Prairie wheat growers since the early 2000s. New resistance genes have traditionally been found by searching for resistance in related plants, then crossbreeding cousin plants with wheat. Researchers are testing a more efficient method of finding resistance genes by tweaking known, defeated, resistance genes to make them effective again.
