The Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG) is investing over $3.67 million in five new weed science research projects focused on pulse crops. The program will run for six years and the research will explore a large variety of topics, including the development and adoption of effective weed control strategies, as well as cultural methods to reduce the impact of weeds in pulses. Researchers will also explore the potential for direct energy to destroy the viability of seeds of common weed species for future use as a combine attachment.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 Agriculture Student Scholarship. Four awards are available for Saskatchewan students in Grade 12 and/or recent high school/GED graduates entering agriculture-related post-secondary studies in fall 2025. The theme for this year is solutions to challenges in agriculture, and applicants are encouraged to submit a creative three-minute video or 1,000-word essay discussing this topic.

The introduction to the market of foliar-applied biological nitrogen (N) products that potentially reduce overall N inputs are gaining interest from crop growers. In 2023, field trials were set up to evaluate the potential ability of two commercially available foliar-applied biological products to support N nutrition and improve yield in canola and wheat crops.

Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba reported higher wheat production in 2024. Saskatchewan wheat production rose 12.2 per cent and yields increased 11.1 per cent. In Alberta, wheat production rose 6.4 per cent and yields increased 7.2 per cent. Wheat production in Manitoba increased only slightly by 0.7 per cent and yields went with it - up 2.4 per cent.

At this year’s Canola Week, representatives from Alberta Canola Producers, SaskOilseeds and Manitoba Canola Growers Association (MCGA) presented an overview of each group’s research focus over the past year and moving forward. They spoke to funding targets for the coming season, on-farm research trials and recapped various programs they ran in 2024.

The Alberta government is conducting a study of more than 100 locations across the province. The goal is to help the government plan long-term ways to maximize Alberta’s water supply, reduce the risk of future droughts and floods and support thriving communities. Expected to be completed in 2025, the study will identify, review and assess potential locations where water storage infrastructure could be most effectively developed to help meet the province's long-term water needs.
