Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba reported higher wheat production in 2024. Saskatchewan wheat production rose 12.2 per cent and yields increased 11.1 per cent. In Alberta, wheat production rose 6.4 per cent and yields increased 7.2 per cent. Wheat production in Manitoba increased only slightly by 0.7 per cent and yields went with it - up 2.4 per cent.

The wheat stem sawfly survey, completed after harvest in 2024, showed decreased severity and area affected by wheat stem sawfly cutting damage in Alberta this year. There were still moderate to high cutting percentages in the traditional sawfly areas and there’s still risk for those areas in 2025. The random nature of the survey means that individual fields may have higher wheat stem sawfly populations than are indicated in the survey map, which is built to show 86 fields in 20 municipalities across southern Alberta and the municipalities along the Saskatchewan/Alberta border as far north as Bodo.

The Canadian Grain Commission report showed that the quality of Canada Western Amber Durum (CWAD) wheat was generally good in 2024, with more than 70 per cent of the crop in the top two grades. The main downgrading factor was test weight due to the dry and hot conditions in major durum growing regions during the grain filling and ripening stages.

Understanding the biggest risk factors for blackleg in canola makes it easier for growers to know which management practices are most important. That’s why Michael Harding, crop health assurance lead for Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, took a machine learning approach to analyze data on contributing risk factors for blackleg. His data collection included blackleg severity, weather, crop rotation and cultivar, along with flea beetle damage and root maggot damage.
