The Canadian Grain Commission report showed that Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat quality was excellent in 2024. Producers submitted wheat samples to the Canadian Grain Commission’s Harvest Sample Program and the samples came back with 94 per cent of the crop in the top two grades. The majority of samples graded No. 2 were downgraded due to hard vitreous kernels (HVK) levels below 65 per cent. Mean protein content was slightly above the ten-year average at 14.1 per cent.

Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba reported higher wheat production in 2024. Saskatchewan wheat production rose 12.2 per cent and yields increased 11.1 per cent. In Alberta, wheat production rose 6.4 per cent and yields increased 7.2 per cent. Wheat production in Manitoba increased only slightly by 0.7 per cent and yields went with it - up 2.4 per cent.

Cereals Canada released its annual New Wheat Crop Report, highlighting the 2024-25 crop year. Canadian farmers grew nearly 34.3 million tonnes of high-quality wheat with a four per cent increase in non-durum wheat production and an eight per cent increase in durum wheat production. This fall, Cereals Canada received over 115 samples of Western Canadian wheat from eight grain exporters for analysis and a high proportion of the crop grading was No. 2 or better.

Most six-row barley varieties grown in Western Canada are largely resistant to spot blotch, but many two-row varieties are still susceptible. The problem is, until now, barley breeders didn’t know exactly which part of their genome was providing this resistance. Thanks to biotech advancements, barley researchers are finding the source of disease resistance.

The race is on, ever since the Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced in May 2023 that gene-edited seeds would be regulated the same as conventionally bred seed varieties, Canadian researchers are investigating how gene editing could be applied to Canadian crops. The first Canadian gene-edited wheat field trial was conducted in 2024.
