message from our publisher

It’s rare for this publication to have a ‘Stop the presses!’ moment but this was one of those times.

In the middle of this issue’s production, the Canadian government made an announcement that the aquaculture industry in British Columbia had been anticipating and dreading. The salmon net pen licenses have been renewed for another five years. But then, starting on Canada Day (July 1), Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) will no longer be accepting new net-pen licenses. Instead, they will only be accepting new license applications for closed containment on land and at sea.

You can read more details about this news in the pages of this issue.
