The aquaculture industry faces growing pressure to adopt sustainable practices, particularly when it comes to packaging. Traditional packaging often relies on expanded polystyrene (EPS), which is not typically recycled and contributes to plastic pollution in the ocean.
“Every year, eight million tons of non-recycled plastics ends up in the ocean,” contends Martin Taillon, technical director at Cascades, referring to research from J.R. Jambeck et al., in the study Plastic waste inputs from land into the ocean, published in 2015.
Recognizing the need for change, Cascades developed northbox OCEAN , a packaging solution consisting of a corrugated cardboard box and an insulated liner made of at least 80 per cent recyclable cardboard, laminated with reflective film. Since its first iteration in 2010, the Cascades northbox OCEAN packaging solution has undergone a series of changes in an effort to become more sustainable and effective.
