About Us

message from our publisher

We’ve just about made it through another year—can you believe it? Somehow, January through October raced by, and now we’re left with a little over a month before 2024 makes its grand entrance.

With that, I’d like to invite you to read our final Blue Line edition of 2023. In the November/December edition, our cover story focused on a new Indigenous cultural training rolled out by Surrey Police Service. Through conversations with DCC Michael LeSage, Insp. Kelly Wong, and Tina Taphouse, an Indigenous artist, we see how law enforcement agencies can authentically connect with local Indigenous peoples while also understanding their history, and why there may be a negative reaction to police officers.

Inside, you’ll find a conclusion to the article focusing on creating a Canadian database of use of force incidents, written by researchers at Carleton University. You can also find an article written by long-time contributor Dave Brown on the topic of topping up your magazine, and how it might be beneficial to officers.

Don’t miss the Q&A with Hi Nguyen, a retired member of the RCMP who is now the Director of Protection Services at the University of Ottawa. During our conversation, we touched on the importance of investing in oneself to become a great team leader.

Finally, you can read up on your regular columns - Case Law by Mike Novakowski, Behavioural Sciences by Peter Collins, and our Back of the Book column, written this month by Julien Heon.

I hope you all enjoy the November/December 2023 edition of Blue Line. Until next time, happy reading, happy holidays and be well.
