What does Canada need to seize the bioeconomy opportunity?
.

Canada is uniquely positioned to be a global leader in the bioeconomy while transitioning to a more sustainable, low-carbon economy. However, to seize this unique opportunity, our economy needs a solid foundation of common definitions of terms, clear parameters to ensure safety, and confidence in emerging biotechnologies and bio-based materials. The biomaterial industry will advance faster and more efficiently if there is clear guidance on minimum requirements for production and operation, as well as a platform for sharing best practices.

Standards can provide the foundation Canada needs to advance to its rightful place as a global leader in the bioeconomy. Significant work is already underway. Already published standards help shape the future of:

  • bioenergy and biofuels
  • sustainable biomass supply chains
  • performance of biomass conversion technologies
  • use and end-of-life management of bio-based materials and products

Read the article Fueling Canada’s Transition to the Bioeconomy to learn why standards and research are critical for advancing the bioeconomy in Canada and how they help:

  • promote solid biofuels as a reliable low-carbon alternative
  • support the safe and efficient production of biogas as a substitute for fossil fuels
  • address biomass supply chain and boost bio-based product development
  • outline the path to a sustainable bioeconomy

Sincerely,
