Overcoming barriers to circularity in construction

Adopting circular methods, such as zero waste on-site, durability, refurbishing, disassembly, and material reuse, can create significant opportunities for Canada’s construction sector. Circular approaches can help the industry meet net-zero targets, reduce environmental impact, strengthen resiliency, and extend the value of resources. However, many barriers hinder the construction sector’s shift toward circularity in Canada.

CSA Group recently released two new research reports that offer insights on how standards can help overcome the barriers and mobilize the industry to further embrace circularity. Establishing a strategic framework for a circular built environment (CBE) in Canada can serve as a first step toward more sustainable construction practices.
