The new NFPA 1970: Everything you need to know about PPE

The NFPA is consolidating several standards to develop a clearer set of guidelines surrounding protective gear, self-contained breathing apparatuses and personal alert safety systems.

The new standard, NFPA 1970, will encompass much of the information contained in NFPA 1971, 1975, 1981 and 1982, along with revised guidelines and mandates. The new NFPA 1970 will be named Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural and Proximity Firefighting, Work Apparel and Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for Emergency Services, and Personal Alert Safety Systems (PASS).

Join NFPA regional director Laura King to learn about the standards consolidation process, the revised 1970 standard, how NFPA 1970 is organized, proposed changes affecting SCBA, fire helmets, turnout gear and hoods, the status of the standard, and what happens next.

Laura King is NFPA regional director for Canada. Contact her at lking@nfpa.org.
