Musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) are soft tissue injuries that can be caused or aggravated by work. These sprains, strains, or disorders of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc. can significantly affect workers, employers, and the workplace.

Preventing MSIs

Common risk factors that may cause or contribute to an MSI include:

  Forceful exertions

  Repetitive motions

Awkward postures such as reaching, bending, or twisting

Environmental conditions such as cold temperatures and even factors like floor grade or surface texture also affect the risks of MSI. When considering risk factors for MSIs, it’s important to note the number of risk factors, how long the worker is exposed to each one, and the severity of each risk factor. Workers, supervisors, managers, and employers can all help prevent MSIs and make the workplace safer and healthier for everyone.
