There's little question that designs for new homes and renovations to existing homes in Canada are going to feature increased demands for electrical service in the decades ahead. But when your renovation client asks for a heat pump, EV charger and/or solar panel, it's not as easy as bringing in the equipment and plugging it in.

The need to upgrade a home's service when electrifying is driven by the load calculation formula, and it uses the total power that all major appliances and services might draw. When you add heat pumps and EV chargers to the load calculation in addition to any existing heating, air conditioning, lighting and appliances, this may result in a need to upgrade a service.

However, new technology allows contractors to potentially work around this problem without having to upgrade the home's entire electrical service.
