In “Finding Balance: Stocking Density and Welfare in Enriched Housing Systems,” Dr. Kenneth Anderson, William Neal Reynolds Professor of Commercial Layer and Small Flock Management at North Carolina State University, will present new research examining how stocking density affects the welfare, behaviour, and productivity of laying hens in colony cage systems. Drawing on detailed behavioural observations and physiological measurements, this work explores how space allowance, hen age, and time of day interact to influence flock dynamics and welfare outcomes.

Speaker background
Dr. Anderson holds degrees from Southern Illinois University and Kansas State University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Poultry Production and Management. A Fellow of the Poultry Science Association, he also directs the North Carolina Layer Performance and Management Test – the only program of its kind worldwide. His research focuses on how genetics, environment, and physiology influence hen behaviour, egg quality, and shell safety, helping guide welfare standards and management practices across the global egg sector.
