Break through barriers within an evolving industry and stay ahead of the curve

Rapid growth in Canada’s electricity and renewable energy sector, coupled with significant retirement rates, have intensified labour demand, and organizations like yours are starting to feel the pressure of talent vacancies. Electricity Human Resources Canada’s (EHRC) latest report on the electricity labor market estimates that close to 28,000 new employees will be needed by 2028, equivalent to 25% of the current labour force – 57% to replace retiring employees, 43% to meet expansion demand. Nearly half of the sector’s 34 core occupations will face labour shortages at the economy-wide level, and the trades will be impacted significantly. We aim to change that.

A top barrier to filling vacancies in the trades continues to be the financial costs associated with bringing apprentices on board. At the same time, employers who hire new talent find that many apprentices stay with the organizations where they started. Additionally, these employers may benefit by developing their new employees’ skills to match the needed job requirements and work culture – and inspiring a sense of loyalty that reduces the risk of workers being lured away by a competitor.

EHRC is leading Empowering Futures – a national hiring incentive program is offering up to $20,000 for the hiring of two new first-year apprentices registered in select construction/manufacturing Red Seal trades. By participating in the program, you will unlock various tools and resources available for organizations like yours who are looking to stay ahead of the competition.

For more information on the Empowering Futures program, please reach out to Yoana Turnin at turnin@ehrc.ca. The pressure is on to break through the barriers of our sector. Apply for hiring incentives today.
