Energy-saving controls solutions

Here are some of the most popular controls solutions to help buildings like yours reduce energy, maintenance and operating costs, improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Demand control ventilation (DCV)

Demand control ventilation uses sensors to monitor and control airflow based on building occupancy to optimize energy use and indoor air quality.

Building automation systems (BAS)

Leverage your building automation system to integrate additional control hardware (DCV, VFDs) and optimize control sequences and scheduling for air handling, heating and heat recovery systems.

Variable frequency drives (VFDs)

These electronic devices control the speed of fans in HVAC systems, reducing energy use and extending equipment life by allowing HVAC systems to run at partial loads when full capacity isn’t required.

Wondering about average incentives?

A typical air handling unit with a VFD, operating at 20,000 cubic feet per minute with 100 percent fresh air and a 70 percent speed setback for half the week, would be eligible for an average incentive of $20,000.6

Other control upgrades that may work for your building include pneumatic-to-digital conversions and boiler combustion controls. Before starting your project, contact your Energy Solutions Advisor—they’ll help you identify the best solution and provide an incentive quote.

¹ Institutional customers include universities, colleges, hospitals, military bases and district energy providers.

² Any references to energy savings are based on the assumption the participant is reducing their natural gas consumption through participation in the Commercial Custom Retrofit program.

³ Any references to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions are based on the assumption that participation in the Commercial Custom Retrofit program results in reduced natural gas consumption. Enbridge Gas does not make any claims regarding the specific amount of GHG reductions achieved.

4 HST will not be included in incentive payments. Terms and conditions apply. See for details. Commercial controls offer is available to all Enbridge Gas commercial customers. For institutional demand control ventilation (DCV) projects, please contact your Energy Solutions Advisor for eligibility criteria. Incentives are calculated based on natural gas savings ($/m³ rate), up to 50 percent of energy efficiency upgrade costs, to a maximum of $100,000 per project. To qualify for $0.50/m³, equipment must be installed and submitted with required documentation by Oct. 31, 2025. To qualify for the bonus rate of $1.00/m³, equipment must be installed and submitted with required documentation by Aug. 31, 2025. “Installed” indicates that the upgrade is operational and functioning as expected. Incentive offers are subject to change based on budget availability. Contact your Energy Solutions Advisor to confirm eligibility.

5 ‘Upgrade costs’ refer to the difference between the equipment and implementation costs of the energy-efficient option and those of the alternate option considered.

6 Actual incentives may vary based on project specifics, building consumption and other factors.
