Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management for the Municipality of Jasper Mathew Conte looks back on his harrowing experience fighting the devastating Jasper wildfires of 2024. The chief also touches on how the municipality has pushed past this challenging time, how wildfire fighting is ingrained into his fire department, and how he became involved in the firefighting service.

This episode is brought to you by VFIS of Canada, a division of CVIS Incorporated, Canada’s largest insurer of firefighters since 1991.

Mathew Conte is the Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management for the Municipality of Jasper, bringing over 25 years of progressive leadership experience in fire services and emergency management.

He began his fire service career at age 16 with the Lumby Fire Department. He joined the Coalhurst Fire Department in 1999, advancing from firefighter to Training Officer before being appointed Fire Chief in 2005. In 2012, he assumed the role of Director of Emergency Management. Since 2021, Mathew has led fire and emergency management operations in Jasper, supporting preparedness and response in a complex, high-risk mountain environment.

He holds a Bachelor of Applied Business degree in Emergency Services from Lakeland College. A certified Incident Commander and Operations Section Chief, he serves on Alberta’s Northwest Zone All Hazards Incident Management Team and has been involved in responses to major incidents, including the Kenow, Chetamon, Yellowhead County, and Jasper Wildfires.
