The annual Wildfire Community Preparedness Day campaign, hosted and organized by the NFPA and State Farm, was created as a way to rally people around the cause of wildfire safety and to turn ideas into action that can make a difference. Australia was ravaged by one of the worst wildfire seasons seen in decades. In early December, an official request for assistance reached the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC), and a cohort of 21 highly trained staff from a variety of provinces were sent for a 38-day deployment to New South Wales. A total of about 300 experts and firefighters from across the country were deployed the next following months. Fire Fighting in Canada covered the Canadian effort in Australia for the March issue.

Firefighters should brace for more forest and wildland blazes across Canada in future years because it will be the new norm as climate change takes hold. Wildland fire experts and ecologists warn that wildfires will likely become more widespread and destruction will become more severe during the summer months in Canada.
