The wildly popular and uplifting drive-by birthday program put on by the Calgary Fire Department is now over. The City of Calgary initiative started in early April during the COVID-19 outbreak as a way for children, between the ages of four and 12, and citizens over the age of 75 to celebrate their special day while physical distancing.

The danger rating of a wildfire occurring in the Fort McMurray Forest Area has been increased to extreme. The region south of Lake Athabasca has been listed at very high, while north of the lake has been marked as extreme.

Drivers today face several distractions behind the wheel: high speeds, road construction, and weather, to name a few. Increased technology and in-vehicle cellular devices make drivers more easily distracted. Even with a perfect blend of responsibility and care, most drivers have not lost the one thing that is seldom to be controlled: curiosity. While a motor vehicle incident provides inherent dangers to first responders on the scene, there are ways to mitigate these at the scene.

The Moose Jaw fire department said a homeowner suffered minor injuries in a fire on Saturday afternoon. According to the fire department, an overheated gas barbecue burst into flames at the back of the home. The fire spread to a home next door, along with a camper in the back yard.

Elaine Birchall, a hoarding behaviour and intervention specialist for over 18 years, talks to Fire Chief Tom DeSorcy about best practices for how to proceed when encountering a hoarding situation on a call. Birchall covers what defines hoarding and how to recognize it, misconceptions around hoarding and how to approach the people involved in a nonjudgmental and sensitive manner.
