Inadequate lockout/tag out (LOTO) of equipment has been identified as the leading workplace safety risk in Ontario’s food manufacturing industry, according to a comprehensive risk assessment led by industry experts and facilitated by Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS).

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) reports 158 lost-time injury (LTI) claims related to machine contact in the food manufacturing sector in 2022 alone, which accounted for eight per cent of all lost-time injuries in the industry.

With the number one risk nailed down, WSPS facilitated a follow-up root cause analysis workshop over two days giving experts a chance to explore the underlying causes of inadequate LOTO and collectively analyse practical solutions.

See what they uncovered and the resulting recommendations for all stakeholders.
