Cutting Food Loss and Waste in Canada: Why Standardized Measurement Matters
With nearly half of all food produced in Canada being wasted each year, food loss and waste (FLW) is a significant issue, carrying substantial economic, environmental, and social costs. Many factors, including a lack of reliable and comparable data, hinder efforts of the industrial, commercial, and institutional sector to reduce and mitigate FLW.
A new research report released by CSA Group, a leading Canadian standards organization, offers a roadmap toward standardized measurement to support FLW reduction efforts. Read the article published by Food in Canada to learn how a common measurement methodology could improve data comparability across services and regions and make it easier to track progress, refine FLW reduction strategies, support food rescue and upcycling, and develop more efficient policies and programs.

By establishing and implementing standardized FLW measurement practices, Canada can advance sustainability in the agriculture and agri-food industry, improve food security, and mitigate environmental impacts related to food loss and waste.
