Do your workers handle or work near hazardous materials? Even short-term exposure to substances can lead to serious acute health effects like burns, dizziness, or respiratory distress, while repeated or prolonged contact can cause chronic conditions such as cancer, lung disease, or organ damage.
That’s why Canada’s Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) exists: to inform and protect workers from physical and health hazards related to the use, storage, handling, or disposal of hazardous products on the job.
Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, specifies worker rights to know about hazards on the job — and employer duties to train and protect them.
Employers must:
- Provide general and workplace-specific WHMIS training
- Ensure hazardous products are properly labeled
- Make up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) accessible
- Supervise and instruct workers to ensure their safety on the job.
Failure to comply puts your workers and your business in harms way.
As Ontario’s government designated health and safety training centre, Workers Health & Safety Centre (WHSC) offers English and French WHMIS training aligned with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). Now and until October 31 you can book our WHMIS program conducted in virtual classrooms for just $5/person.
Among other things, this comprehensive, instructor-led training equips participants to:
- Understand GHS-modified labels, pictograms, and SDSs, including new standardized hazard classifications
- Navigate the Act and WHMIS regulations
- Apply learning for real-world solutions.
Protect your workplace. Meet legal obligations. Prevent serious health implications.
