Vanessa Currie
Vanessa Currie began conducting potato research after graduating university in 1989. She started by working with controls for Colorado Potato Beetle but soon developed a passion for finding new potato varieties for Canadians. Gary Johnston, breeder of the Yukon Gold potato, was her first mentor. Over the years the potato research program at the University of Guelph has encompassed a wide range of subjects, such breeding new varieties for chip and fresh markets, potatoes for human health, alternate markets for potatoes, and more recently, potato pathology. Vanessa loves researching and eating potatoes.
Christine Noronha
Dr. Christine Noronha is currently a research scientist (entomology, IPM) at the Charlottetown Research and Development Centre (AAFC) in P.E.I. Dr. Noronha has presented research at several national and international conferences including the International Rape seed conference and published a book chapter on “Pollen beetles in North America.” In addition to pollen beetle, she also conducts research on other insect pest species, namely Colorado potato beetle, European corn borer, wireworms, and aphids. She was also one of Annex Business Media’s 2022 Influential Women in Canadian Agriculture.
Erica Fava
Over the years, Erica Fava has worked with private industry trialling new pest control products, with Quebec’s agricultural insurance program and as the New Brunswick’s environmental farm plan coordinator. Erica joined Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in New Brunswick working on integrated cropping systems, pesticide risk reduction, and minor use pesticides. Currently Erica is co-ordinating the National Potato Variety Trials as the biologist and industry liaison for AAFC’s Potato Breeding Program. Vanessa Currie is a research technician in the U of G Department of Plant Agriculture.
