A MESSAGE FROM OUR PUBLISHER

In the year 2000 A.D., USB Thumb drives became available for the public. Three years later, a joint survey by the FBI & CSI determined that one third of all data theft was the result of employees inside organizations; and the estimated damage was in the billions of dollars. Today, we have cloud based storage, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policies... and post-COVID work from home flexibility. What are the statistics now?

Unless you work in the diamond industry or as a military defense contractor, your employee base is likely not very receptive to working under highly secure conditions. The age old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” holds very true when discussing protection of sensitive data, it's not as pragmatic in the free-flow of information required for today's competitive businesses.

When faced with the resignation of a disgruntled employee, management may be alerted enough to investigate the potential of a breach. But the sharpest of thieves stay under the radar. We cut a cake, sign a card, and wish the resigned employee all the best as they move on. Months may pass before someone finds out that they actually moved to a competitor.

This presentation will explore the lesser known, but incredibly powerful mitigation tool of digital forensics. We will discuss the next best response to prevention, and how all companies can embrace this science, and take proactive steps towards insuring that internal data breaches are mitigated to the best level possible. We'll explore the most powerful civil remedy in Canadian law, called the “Anton Piller Order”, and case studies where digital forensics made all the difference in protecting the future of a company, following the devastation of serious data theft.
