Specialty crops could be a source of new or additional revenue, while breaking up pest cycles on the farm. But there’s also a big reason why many producers avoid them: the lack of processing capacity in the province.

A bread wheat research project in Quebec is aiming to capture the resiliency that comes with the genetic diversity in old-time crops while maintaining the advantages of today’s elite varieties. CETAB+, plant geneticist André Comeau and two Quebec-based flour milling companies are examining the possible advantages of increased genetic diversity by mixing bread wheat varieties together in a field.
