Winter pulses promise many benefits: they break up pest and disease cycles, offer a rotational alternative to winter wheat and are harvested earlier than spring pea. But outside of southern Alberta, winter pulses haven’t yet made it to the western Canadian crop landscape. Farming Smarter, a research and extension group in southern Alberta, is conducting trials to assess survivability.

Interest and demand for pulse crops like lentil is increasing year over year, and in 2020, Canadian lentil farmers had the numbers to back that statement up. Canada is the top global exporter of lentils, so keeping an eye on potential export markets is an important consideration for current and future lentil growers – but would this even be a story about 2020 without a curveball?
