Managing sclerotinia on irrigated land is difficult, as over 50 per cent of the crops grown can host the disease. The push to pay off irrigation costs often means that sclerotinia-susceptible crops are grown successively, without a break in the rotation. That’s where a biological control product like Contans WG, which prevents infected sclerotia from germinating, comes in, says Gary Kruger, Sask Ag irrigation agrologist.

Quinoa has expanded its presence on the Prairies since it was first grown in Saskatchewan in the early nineties. One challenge growers started experiencing in 2016 and 2017 was extensive unidentified insect damage. Boyd Mori, assistant professor of entomology at the University of Alberta, led a research project in 2018-19 to identify quinoa’s insect pests and how to manage them.
