Prairie provinces publish final crop reports of 2020

Harvest is essentially complete in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, well ahead of each province’s long-term average for harvest completion. Overall, crop quality is good and yields are average.


New wireworm control PMRA-approved

Starting in 2021, corn, potato and cereals growers will have a wireworm control option that can kill the pest. Broflanilide, registered by BASF, is a powerful insecticide that targets all wireworms larval stages.


UM professor receives outreach award

Don Flaten, professor of soil science at the University of Manitoba, received the award for his three decades of engaging producers, industry, students and the general public on the importance of agriculture.

A special K soybean problem

Sometimes research creates more questions than answers. University of Manitoba graduate student Megan Bourns’ research on soybean response to potassium (K) fertilizer showed a lack of yield response. Bourns and her supervisor, Don Flaten, conducted 20 site-years of on-farm, small plot, and comparative trials with barley to find K fertilization had little to no effect on soybeans. » Learn more
